Forget about the toothache

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment of dental nerves located in the tooth root.

Damage to the dental nerve usually occurs due to decay or trauma. In both cases, the dental nerve needs to be properly treated by disinfecting, cleaning, and filling the root canal space to prevent the spread of infection. Endodontic treatment can be completed in a single visit or within 7 to 10 days, depending on the situation.

What does the nerve treatment process look like?

Before the procedure, an X-ray is taken with an orthopantomogram to assess the condition of the canals and the extent of tooth decay or inflammation.

The procedure itself involves removing the nerve or treating an already dead nerve.

In both cases, the goal is the same: to remove all organic material from the root, thoroughly clean the space, and fill it to prevent the infection from spreading.

How long does the treatment take?

Sometimes, treatment can be completed in a single visit!

However, if the inflammation is widespread or if the patient presents with swelling, several visits may be necessary to create the optimal conditions for filling the root.

It's important to emphasize that in the vast majority of cases, treatment is completed within 7-10 days. Long-term treatments lasting months, with the tooth left open, are not part of modern endodontic therapy.

Recovery Instructions

Pain after an endodontic procedure is normal, as with most surgical procedures.

The dentist may prescribe pain relievers, and the treated area can be painful for several days.

After the procedure, avoid eating until the anaesthesia wears off completely and reduce chewing activity for a few days in the treated area.

Endodontic treatment, or root canal therapy, is performed when the dental pulp is affected by inflammation or has already died. The goal is to remove the infected material, thoroughly clean the root canal, and seal it to prevent the spread of infection.

Root canal revision is a re-treatment of a tooth when the previous treatment did not achieve the expected result. The goal is to re-treat the canal and remove the cause of the existing problem.

What does the procedure feel like?

Before any endodontic procedure, patients receive local anaesthesia to help them not feel the procedure. After the procedure, as the anaesthesia wears off, pain may occur, and we recommend taking pain relievers.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery lasts up to several days, during which you may feel pain in the treated area. Therefore, you may take pain relievers as needed to alleviate the pain, and you should be mindful of the type of food you eat and how you chew.

Can a dental nerve heal on its own?

Yes! There are forms of inflammation where healing can occur. We use various tests for diagnosis to help us monitor nerve recovery.

Can a tooth with an extracted nerve hurt again?

Yes! The infection can return, and so can the pain. In such cases, the pain is different and usually occurs when biting, as it involves inflammation of the surrounding bone of the tooth. There are several reasons why reinfection can occur, but it is often due to weak teeth for which the best recommendation is to make a dental crown to strengthen them.
